Over the past year, many new homeowners have entered the market and home sales have increased. Unfortunately, people of color, women, and families with children have been left out of the homebuying frenzy. Connecticut Fair Housing Center is launching a new project to investigate issues that prevent black, indigenous, people of color, and others protected by civil rights laws from buying a home or avoiding foreclosure. This position will help plan, coordinate, and implement fair housing and fair lending investigations to identify and end violations of the law.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Working with staff to identify and investigate barriers to affordable and equitable homeownership in Connecticut;
  • Assisting with research, analysis, and data gathering activities;
  • Recruiting and training a diverse group of people to perform fair housing and fair lending tests;
  • Coordinating fair housing and fair lending tests;
  • Investigating complaints of fair lending discrimination;
  • Presenting information to community members on issues that may affect their ability to buy or keep a home;
  • Working with attorneys to address discrimination that prevents people of color and others from accessing homeownership or keeping their home.

Qualifications:

  • Either a bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience in supervising people to accomplish tasks on-time and to high standards; OR, an associate’s degree, with relevant experience;
  • Ability to teach complex concepts to people with limited familiarity with the subject matter;
  • Demonstrated ability to implement established protocols for investigations and experience in ensuring that the people supervised also follow such protocols;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated interest in and passion for combating housing discrimination or other civil rights violations, or related issues;
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative as well as to collaborate with others working on the same or similar projects;
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Bilingual and/or bicultural individuals are strongly encouraged to apply.

The starting salary for this position is $55,000+ with starting salary determined by experience and skills.
